And, with the 25th episode completed, that brings Voiceprint into a hiatus of sorts. We won’t be back for a new episode until sometime in the late spring of 2010, due to (mostly) my being away during the madness that is the 2010 Winter Olympics, churning through the streets of Vancouver in February. I’ll try and be back up and running in April sometime, so keep watching the skies…

Try and get your questions for Gary in before December, folks. I gotta get this one done before Xmas, because there won’t be another Voiceprint (probably) until April 2010! Yes, that winter monster, the 2010 Olympics will upon us here in rainy Vancouver, and that means Trev will be long gone from this crowded, insane, police-state of a city during that time. So… send in the questions for Gary, because there’s gonna be an even LONGER wait than usual for the one after that…

Argh.

BUT - I assure you, it’s not for lack of trying! Unfortunately, summer is that time of year when folks decide they’d rather fly overseas to someplace warm and tropical than sit in a Vancouver studio recording podcasts. And ironically, I’m not talking about ME right now. Cathy actually is on vacation at the moment, and between our schedules, we couldn’t find a time to record the next Voiceprint episode. However, she’s back soon, as as soon as she is, we’ll get this show on the road! And THAT is a promise. ;

Until then, keep watching the cyber-skies…

In the meantime, congratulations to our contest winner (again, no spoilers here! It’s all in the file, baby)!
They did it. They really did it. So often crudely caricatured by others, the American people yesterday stood in the eye of history and made an emphatic choice for change for themselves and the world. Though bombarded by a blizzard of last-minute negative advertising that should shame the Republican party, American voters held their nerve and elected Barack Obama as their new president to succeed George Bush. Elected him, what is more, by a clearer majority than one of those bitter narrow margins that marked the last two elections.

Having snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in 2000 and 2004 it felt at times fated that the Democrats would somehow complete a hat-trick of failures on election day 2008. Instead, fuelled by unprecedented financial support, the key things went right for them yesterday, from the moment just after midnight when Dixville Notch voted 15 to six for Mr Obama (the first time the early-voting New Hampshire hamlet had gone for a Democrat in 40 years), through to the early Obama success last night in the prized swing state of Pennsylvania and on into the battleground areas of middle America.

In the last two presidential elections, the American people divided down the middle, producing a both a geographical and a demographic divide that seemed increasingly set in stone. Blue Democratic America consisted of the west and the east coasts plus the upper Midwest. Red Republican America covered the swaths in between. Women, minorities, the poor and the highly educated voted Democratic. Men, white people, the rich and the religious delivered for the Republicans. In the mind of Mr Bush’s strategist Karl Rove this division was the template of 21st century American politics, a base for a conservative counter-attack against 20th-century liberalism.

Rove’s America was not just turned on its head yesterday. It was broken up and recast in a very different mould. One of Mr Obama’s many achievements has been his refusal to accept the permanence of the blue-red divide. He has reached out across the divide to states and voters that the embattled Democratic party of the Reagan-Bush years had forgotten about, places like the South and the Rockies, voters like farmers and small business people.

With the Democrats powerfully consolidating their position in both houses of Congress yesterday, the shift was consolidated at state and district level. This marks the end of the conservative ascendancy of the past 30 years. Whether it now marks a new, sustained era of American liberalism of the sort which followed the election of 1932 must remain to be seen. What is not open to doubt is that Mr Obama’s win is a milestone in America’s racial and cultural evolution. It is 45 years since Martin Luther King, in the greatest of all late-20th century American speeches looked forward to the day when his children would not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character. Almost unbelievably, that dream has now become a reality in the shape of America’s first African-American leader and its first black first family. It is a day many thought they would never see. It is hard to know whether to weep or shout for joy now that it has arrived - probably both - but it is a lesson to the world.

Mr Obama will take office in January amid massive unrealisable expectations and facing a daunting list of problems - the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the broken healthcare system, the spiralling federal budget and America’s profligate energy regime all prominent among them. Eclipsing them all, as Mr Obama has made clear in recent days, is the challenge of rebuilding the economy and the banking system. These, though, are issues for another day. Today is for celebration, for happiness and for reflected human glory. Savour those words: President Barack Obama, America’s hope and, in no small way, ours too.

Remember: the contest for helping to promote the show is still on… the grand prize (to be drawn after episode 20, likely) is a cd of all the Voiceprint episodes, signed by all of the guests. So send off your evidence of promoting Voiceprint to fans@trevordevall.com.

Also, I mentioned in this episode to write your local Convention organizers to get them to bring me and Voiceprint to your city to do a live episode as a panel event (ala Vic’s appearance in Episode 4).
I was hoping to get Colin Murdock’s long, LONG awaited interview done before next week - but alas, my friends, that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. On August 21st I have to leave the country for a few weeks, and there’s no time between now and then to record the episode (don’t worry, my exodus isn’t related to any impending legal charges… it’s a purely professional/personal/philosophical kinda vacation-trip thing).

SO… the best I can do is to beg your continued patience, and to ask you to believe my solemn vow that in September - come hell or high water! - the 16th episode of Voiceprint will be up and posted.

In the meantime, sit tight, and keep watching the cyber-skies…

(reprinted from Dylan Rhymer’s Facebook page)

Okay, I know this is a long-ish mesage, but it is very important. We need legislation to prevent Bell and Rogers from monopolizing on Canadians’ access to the internet. This WILL HAPPEN unless we pressure government to enact legislation immediately! Take a minute to get up to speed. Let people know.

“When I invented the Web, I didn’t have to ask anyone’s permission. Now, hundreds of millions of people are using it freely. I am worried that that is going end” – that is a quote from Sir Tim Berners Lee.

When people pool their information, expertise, and resources together – you often get amazing results. And that’s essentially what the Internet is – the world’s most amazing source of information. The web is democratic – it’s all about equality of access – it’s available to anybody with Internet access and no one is supposed to get preferential treatment. Unfortunately, some very powerful companies are trying to change all that.

Net Neutrality doesn’t sound very sexy – but at its core – it’s about Saving the Internet. Net Neutrality in Canada is the principle that consumers should be in control of what content, services and applications they use on the public Internet. It’s a pretty simple concept and it’s been working pretty well so far.

I love how the Internet works. Whether it’s a corporate retail site, a celebrity gossip site, or a Norwegian Folk Singer’s blog – all the pages are sent to my computer with equal speed. It’s democracy at its finest.

But what happens if ISP’s - Internet service providers like telcos and cable companies - start slowing down some traffic and speeding up others to make more money? What happens if they decide they don’t like what someone is saying and prevent people from getting to it? What if - suddenly, you can’t go where you want on the Internet and you have to pay extra to go in the fast lane with the big guys?

Well, if the Service Providers have their way and we lose net neutrality - surfing the Internet will be very different experience that it is today. These companies want to ability to slow down some Internet sites and block access to others. As Canadians – do we want to have less access to information than other countries? Do we want to make sure we give our kids, our businesses, and our entrepreneurs the tools they need to succeed in the digital age?

It doesn’t matter if you’re politics are left, right, or centre - we all love the Internet and we need to save it. Ottawa professor Michael Geist has great information on his website and there’s a campaign called netneutrality.ca gaining steam – just type in – savethenet.ca The CRTC has only given us till June 12 to make our voices heard.

This sort of discrimination would really hinder future innovations. A lot of really popular sites, like Google, eBay, and YouTube wouldn’t even exist if there hadn’t been net neutrality. And democracy is all about free speech – and the other frightening thing about this is that I.S.P.’s could censor speech they don’t like — in fact, we’ve already had examples of it.

In September 2007 in the States, Verizon Wireless refused to allow a Pro-Choice organization from sending text messages over its network. In 2005, Telus blocked access to voices-for-change.ca, a website supporting the company’s labour union during a worker’s dispute. Right now, Bell Canada is throttling (or slowing down) third party Internet service providers (ISPs)

The Internet should continue to offer equal access to everyone. Cable and telecos shouldn’t be allowed to say who gets the fast lane, who gets the slow lane, and where we’re allowed to go on the Internet.

Net Neutrality is about giving equal access to everybody – the net has become an integral part of the way we share ideas and information and has been an instrumental factor in digital innovation. We’ve got to fight to keep it that way. We’ve got to savethenet Canada.

You can learn more about net neutrality and make your voice heard at savethenet.ca and netneutrality.ca. And also please check out Michael Geist.ca – that’s G-E-I-S-T who has a really informative website with lots of excellent information.

Apologies for the delay of the next episode with Ian Corlett - between scheduling issues and this virulent flu bug that I am just now getting over, we haven’t been able to record the show yet. Thanks for all your questions… hopefully this Friday I’ll be able to get to all of them. Fingers crossed!

In other news, there are a few conventions I’ll be doing this year (I have to keep the number down this summer to accomodate my ridiculously busy working schedule). Here`s a couple:

Toronto Animecon - Toronto, Ontario (March 15-16) (www.hobbystar.com/upcomingevents/torontoanimecon2008.html)

Matsuricon - Columbus, Ohio (August 23-24) (www.matsuricon.org/)

For the Toronto con, Brian Dobson and I are flying in together. I have an interesting idea for a special Voiceprint episode revolving around this particular event, so stay tuned…

I was supposed to record the show with Brad Swaile tonight, but I have come down with a wickedly bad cold; then I’ll be out of town for the next week or so, so I won’t be able to do the show until after that. Hopefully the new episode will be up the week of October 8th.

Well, we’ve been up and running for a month now, and word of the podcast is starting to get out there.
I also received an email from the senior research analyst and “anime master” at YTV, with some sneak preview information to be aired during Matt Hill’s interview! That interview happens in just a few days, so if you have anything to ask or say to Matt, let me know at voiceprint@trevordevall.com.

And an important notice to those of you attending Animethon in Edmonton (Aug 10-12): our special live episode of Voiceprint with Trevor Devall & Guests will be presented as a scheduled panel that you can sit in on, listen to, and even be a part of, as I’ll be taking questions from the audience. My guest that day will be Vic Mignogna, so don’t miss it!

This will be my second appearance at my home town’s anime convention, and I’m looking forward to it - they always treat us guest-types really well! Also, Vic Mignogna is appearing at the con, and he doesn’t know it yet, but he’s going to be a surprise guest on a special “live-from-the-con” episode of Voiceprint… (http://www.animethon.org)

Anime Evolution in Burnaby, BC Canada, August 17-19. I love the guys out at Anime Evolution (I was a guest in 2006 and 2004 as well), and I’m thrilled to be a part of their con once again. (http://www.animeevolution.com)

That’s it for now…but check this space for future appearances!
